In wet, miserably cold and potentially dangerous conditions, Lichfield showed real class in overcoming a Tamworth outfit, shorn of confidence, on Saturday. In winds of up to 60 mph, the Myrtle Greens gave a master class in how to deal with these wintry elements, scoring twelve tries from assured handling and game management skills.
The game was played out on the far back pitch at Tamworth’s Wiggington Park ground and, to be fair, the surface was reasonable, but no one can recollect such a bitingly cold storm on a rugby pitch. Despite this, Lichfield raced into an early lead with three tries and, by half time, the end result was inevitable with them more than 40 points up.
There was a real buzz in the group at the end, keeping Tamworth scoreless needed concentration and effort and the city side has reached the half way stage of the league programme with a record of 11 wins from 11 games, earning 53 points and missing out on only two try bonus points. So, the reverse fixtures kick in from Saturday with a testing visit to Melbourne up first and then a final home game before Christmas against an improving Newark side, both at 2.15pm.
David Mott, with three, and Rich Burton contributed four tries and were the principle scorers and Kai Lucas-Dumolo had the thankless task of taking the conversions and finished with a decent 50% record. Along with a try, he finished with a personal tally of seventeen points, as ‘’Lich’’ became the highest scorers to date in the league with 435 points.
WOMEN:
LICHFIELD LADIES RED 43 BARNSLEY 5 PTS
Lichfield maintained their second spot in the Championship North league with this bonus point victory over a game and hard working Barnsley side. After a first half in which they were camped in their own half for long periods, scoring two breakaway tries to lead 10-5 at half time was a real bonus for the Red XV.
Whilst the winds were not that strong by kick off time, the fact that the game was played down one end throughout indicates that it had an effect. The game was settled in the ten minutes before the hour mark, as Amy Edmondson scored her side’s third try and Barnsley complained too loudly about it and went down to 14 for ten minutes. Soon afterwards, the Barnsley full back saw red for a tackle deemed to be high and out of control. From then onwards, there was only going to be one winner with Lichfield scoring four more converted tries.
Barnsley are a well coached unit with some talented individuals and were able to exploit early territorial supremacy with a fifth minute unconverted try from the forwards. In a rare excursion into the opposition half, Lichfield were able to give the speedy Karolina Kacirkova just enough room to escape down the left and finish with aplomb. The next time she saw the ball, she raced clear again – using a nifty chip ahead – and she fed Molly Draycott for the
second try. From then on to half time, Lichfield had to work really hard to keep their line intact and their supremacy in the scrum, thanks to the work of Danii Allen, Tanya Bird and Samantha Williams, proved a real hindrance to the visitors.
The second half was easier from the outset for Lichfield, however, a lot of team effort was needed to allow Edmondson to sneak into the corner for that crucial third try on 50 minutes. Facing thirteen for a while, allowed Lichfield to gain real momentum and four more tries followed from Grace Collins, Edmondson, Kacirkova and Draycott, who also converted them all for a very satisfying result before meeting Cheltenham next Sunday at 2.15pm.
COLTS:-
CAMP HILL COLTS 50 LICHFIELD COLTS GREEN 0 PTS
The Green team, who are working really hard to cope with bigger and more advanced opponents at the moment, found top of the table, Camp Hill, too good on Sunday and ended up conceding 50 points without being able to trouble the scoreboard operator. Their next game is away at Telford on Sunday, a team they have already beaten, so there is confidence that this can be repeated.
The Red team game against Luctonians was postponed and they now face Ilkeston in a friendly on Sunday. Both are 2pm.
JUNIORS:-
The U16 boys gained a fourth league win of the season with a narrow 27-22 win at Burton on Sunday morning. The 14s fell 12-0 down to Sutton in less than even time at home, but rescued the day by winning 40-26, whilst the 15s lost away to Sutton by 31-5. The 12s managed to put out two sides against Bournville with players moving across games to test their mettle.
In the afternoon, a youngish girls 16s were defeated by an older Stafford side at Cooke Fields, whilst the redoubtable 14s (on their travels again) were too good for a combined Newport/Shrewsbury side, winning 63-19.
