WEEKEND ROUND UP | 2-3RD NOVEMBER
WOMEN’S AND JUNIOR/MINI NEWS
WOMEN:
NOVOS LADIES 0 LICHFIELD WOMEN (RED) 39 PTS
On Saturday, Lichfield women’s 1st XV moved up to third place in Championship North 1 with this impressive victory – especially given the journey to Newcastle to achieve it – scoring six tries in the process, whilst restricting Novos to absolutely nothing on the scoreboard. This was even more pleasing, given the home side’s results on their own ground had been good to date.
The deadly duo of Molly Draycott and Karolina Kacirkova accounted for half of the tries and the latter’s score right on half time made the game feel safer during the half time talk – leading by 18 points at that stage. Three more tries followed in the second half, all of which were converted by Draycott.
Charlotte Bozon opened the scoring within ten minutes coming up from full back, ten minutes later Draycott had crossed as well and added a penalty to take the score line out to thirteen points.
In the 2nd half, Draycott really made the game safe with a try three minutes into the second stanza and the lead was extended five minutes later by Heidi Lantos. The final try was scored by Collins late on for a very good day out in the north east.
This Sunday the Green team are at home (league) to Old Leamingtonians, KO 2pm with no game for the senior side.
The gifted girls under 14s defeated a Melbourne/Ashby/Coaville combination by 57-12 on Sunday and the girls 12s had a training game with Market Drayton.
MEN:-
After a week off, the men’s 1st XV have a home league game against Mellish (Nott’m) with KO at 2:15pm (from now until March) and the 2s travel to play Hinckley 3s (U23 side), same time, in Counties 3 Midlands West (East).
On Sunday, the colts Red team face Silhillians in a league game at home, KO 2pm, whilst the Green team are attempting to arrange a friendly.
JUNIORS:-
There were two very similar games at Cooke Fields on Sunday morning with both resulting in relatively comfortable score lines for the Myrtle Green sides, but not without a lot of real graft. The under 16s was the tighter of the two games, remaining 0-0 until nearly half time before a battling individual effort opened the scoring. The lead was soon extended to 12 points after half time, but a capable Lutterworth team very quickly replied with a try from a
quickly taken penalty. This was the only time the Lichfield defence, which worked hard and effectively throughout, was breached, as they switched off for a few vital seconds. It remained 12-5 until the last ten minutes with Lichfield gradually getting the upper hand, looking slightly the fitter, in a real battle up front.
Lutterworth fatally lost control in midfield on the halfway line and this was gobbled up for a converted try and then a clear overlap on the left edge was finally exploited on the wing for try number four and a 24-5 win.
The 14s were pitted against a bigger Oadby Wyggs (OWs) outfit, however, they had pace on the outsides, which caused the visitors problems all morning. Two tries were scored in the early stages before OWs forwards manufactured a try after a lot of pressure.
This 14 group will always have to compete hard for possession, yet once they have the ball they will hurt opposition sides. The game panned out to be a contest between the forwards for a few minutes, but then Lichfield would stretch it wide and tries followed, so that eventually they had a victory of 42-14.
The 15s travelled to Lutterworth on Sunday and came away with a very satisfying 38-15 win against the Leicestershire side, who are well drilled throughout the different age groups.
