PRESIDENT’ ROUND UP
MEN:-
LICHFIELD 42 WALSALL 18 PTS
As Martyn Gabbitass has already reported, the men’s 1st XV produced one of their best performances of the season to beat Walsall on Saturday. Tries came from Rhys Davies (his first at this level), Freddie Wilson, Rory Davis, Sam Benson and captain, Kieran Reynolds, with two. Josh Butler maintained his kicking form with 6 from 6. Walsall were left try less for 72 minutes, which said a lot about the Lichfield ‘’D’’, but managed two late ones from Rob Angell and Dan Carpenter.
This coming Saturday, the 1s host West Bridgford, a game previously postponed in January for icy conditions, kick off 2.15pm.
NUNEATON 2s 38 LICHFIELD 2s 19 PTS
Lichfield second string had a decent first half and led 12-7 at Nuneaton by half time, courtesy of two tries from Harry McDonough. Out of nowhere, the home side had a purple patch, which produced 31 points for them in well less than even time, and the game was won. Tom Day did grab a third try for ‘’Lich’’ – Mike Turner added a second conversion – but there was no bonus point try to be had and the side remains sixth in the league.
The 2s visit Pinley 1s on Saturday, KO 2.15pm.
WOMEN:-
LICHFIELD REDS 41 NOVOS 5 PTS
Whilst not at their very best after their positive exertions at Buckingham the week before, Lichfield women 1st XV were too strong for their visitors from Newcastle upon Tyne on Saturday, as they maintain their third spot in Championship North 1.
Right wing, Amy Edmondson, opened the scoring on four minutes, but it took nearly half an hour for them to extend this lead. Inevitably, the second of Lichfield’s three try scoring machines was involved and Karolina Kacirkova added two in five minutes just before half time, with Molly Draycott (the third) kicking a conversion for a 17-0 lead at the break.
Chelsea Grimley extended the advantage early in the second period, which sparked a response from the visitors in the form of a try in the left hand corner. Draycott put the game to bed with a typical individual effort, her conversion was her third. As the visitors started to tire, Lichfield spread the ball to the flanks and both wingers, Edmondson and Kacirkova, finished off two breaks with tries.
The Red team are back in action at Sale on 16 February, but the Green team’s game against Handsworth this coming weekend has been postponed until the end of March.
LICHFIELD COLTS (RED) 35 LUCTONIANS 7 PTS
The Lichfield colts Red team maintained their unbeaten league season with a controlled performance against their visitors from Herefordshire, scoring five tries in the process. Despite having most of the territorial advantage in the opening 35 minutes, they were only leading by two Lucas Laing penalties as half time approached. A safe and secure backs move allowed Jack Gripton to score in the clubhouse corner and the picture looked more rosy.
Lichfield played with more assurance from there onwards and were soon adding an Alfie Mitchell try from close range, converted by Laing. Reiss Tew and Leni Payne extended the lead with further tries, one converted by Laing, before Luctonians got a deserved try under the posts from a kindly bounce. Gripton scored try number five with a classy finish.
This Sunday, the Red colts face Stafford in the league at home, KO 2pm
LICHFIELD COLTS (GREEN) 5 WOLVERHAMPTON 45 PTS
The colts Green team visited Wolverhampton for a friendly match with only fourteen players available and eventually that made a difference to the final result, which did not reflect their efforts during the afternoon.
JUNIORS:-
Once again there were mixed results from the boys and girls junior sides on Sunday. Both the boys 16s and 15s lost against Yardleians Devn and Kenilworth respectively, whilst the 14s qualified for the county final against Burton on 9 March by defeating Barton 48-7. The 12s’ two sides entertained Burntwood and Melbourne and maintained their undoubted progress as a squad. The successful girls 14 group just lost to a good Barkers Butts team by 17 points to 12 – a rare loss.
